Reality (Who this may fit)
Home bound, No reliable transportation, Re-Entry
Disabled, 55 and over, want something to do, and you
Who would pay me just to talk?
The conversation is only part of it. People often pay for reliability, companionship, accountability, encouragement, and follow-through.
How much time is this going to take?
It depends on the opportunity. Some check-ins last a few minutes. Reading aloud might be scheduled once or twice a week. Many talking opportunities are flexible and can often fit around other responsibilities.
Is this really helping someone?
A short conversation may not seem important until someone is expecting it. Sometimes the value isn’t the conversation itself. It’s knowing someone remembered.
Why People Pay For This
The funny thing is that people pay for this all the time.
Not because words are magical, but because life gets messy. People get busy. People get
lonely. People get stuck. People need reminders, encouragement, accountability, or simply
another human being who remembers they exist.
Somewhere along the way we decided that only complicated things have value. Yet a five-minute
conversation can sometimes do more good than an expensive gadget.
Not every opportunity in this room will make you rich. But it might help someone feel
less forgotten. And that’s not a bad day’s work for a person who mostly showed up and talked.
Yet here we are.
Friendly Check In’s. Setup Time: A few hours
A phone, a simple way to schedule calls, and a handful of interested customers are often enough to get started.
These can be 10-15 minute calls scheduled at an agreed upon time. 3 to 4 of these an hour is a decent hourly wage. You’re checking in with someone that wants to tell you about their day, or their interest. You control the call by asking questions and actively listening. These calls can end on a happy note that uplifts both of your days.
Reading Aloud. Setup Time: A few hours
Once you have a customer and a book, newspaper, or reading material, you can begin immediately.
Over time you will read a book chosen by the customer, or it may be the daily paper. It’s easy enjoyable work that your customer is interested in and will listen to. If it’s a book, the customer may have read it years ago and will relish the trip down memory lane as you retell a story.
Conversation Partners. Setup Time: One day
Most of the setup involves finding your first customer and deciding how you will schedule conversations.
Not every conversation has a purpose beyond connection. Some people enjoy having someone to talk with, share stories with, discuss hobbies, or simply spend time with. As a conversation partner, you’re providing friendly interaction, curiosity, and a listening ear. The conversation may revolve around current events, personal interests, life experiences, books, movies, travel, or everyday happenings. The goal isn’t to solve problems or provide advice. It’s to create an enjoyable conversation that both people look forward to having.

Take Inventory – You’re More Capable Than You Think
You already talk with friends, family members, neighbors, and people you meet throughout your day. You know how to listen, ask questions, share stories, and show interest in what others have to say. These everyday skills have value. For some people, a friendly conversation, a regular check-in, or someone willing to listen can make a meaningful difference.
Many of the skills needed for this work are things you already do in everyday life. The difference is learning how to provide them consistently as a service.
Guess What?
Talking work is often overlooked because conversation feels ordinary. In reality, many people need reminders, accountability, companionship, or someone to follow up consistently. Whether the work takes place by phone, video, or online, reliability is often more valuable than expertise. Simple conversations can help people stay connected, organized, and moving forward

Setup time & What It Takes
This work requires very little setup. A phone, a way to schedule calls, and a willingness to listen are often enough to begin. The biggest challenge is finding your first customer and deciding what type of service you want to offer. Whether you choose friendly check-ins, reading aloud, or conversation partner services, consistency and reliability are often more important than experience.
