Reality (Who this may fit)
No reliable transportation, Re-Entry, Physically strong,
Homeless, 55 and over, want something to do, and you
I just need a job
That’s the first step: Willingness to work. The difference now is, work may not come to you the way it used to. You can still try, but while you’re waiting focus on money, focus on work – not a job.
No one’s going to hire me.
That may be true. While you’re waiting, focus on the work you can create for yourself.
If that is the case, then focus on your own work. You’ll find that tired people, busy people and people that are overwhelmed may be looking for someone like you. At that time, few things about. you matter if you can do the work.
I can work hard, but I don’t have specialized skills
That’s not what the customer is looking for.
They need help moving something, carrying something, loading something, or getting a difficult task done. Reliability and willingness often matter more than specialized training.
Why This Work Exists
Opportunities often appear where physical work needs to be done. People move, events take place, deliveries arrive, and heavy items need to be relocated. Many of these tasks are too large, too awkward, or too time-consuming for one person to handle alone. That’s where this work comes from.
Closing down / Opening up. Setup Time: 30 minutes to a few hours.
Every event begins with work and ends with work. Before the public arrives, someone has to unload equipment, set up tables, arrange displays, and get everything in place. When the day is over, it all has to be packed up, loaded, and put away. If you’re willing to do physical work and follow directions, opportunities can be found at community events, swap meets, fairs, churches, and community functions..
People are often looking for dependable help more than specialized experience. Make yourself visible.
Moving Help. Setup Time: Visibility needed, one day
People move every day, but not everyone has enough hands to do the work. Many opportunities begin with helping someone load or unload a truck, carry furniture, move boxes, or rearrange a room. Friends, family, neighbors, apartment residents, and people posting local requests often need an extra set of hands. You don’t need to own a moving company. You only need to be reliable, willing to help, and able to do the work safely.
This work depends on your ability to be visible and ready. A simple ad on Craigslist, Marketplace, community boards, or local groups can increase your chances of finding customers.
Heavy Item Assistance. Setup Time: Visibility needed, one day
Sometimes a person has one problem, not a moving job. A refrigerator needs to be loaded, a couch needs to be moved, a large planter needs to be relocated, or building materials need to be carried. These one-time jobs are often too much for one person but too small for a professional crew. This creates opportunities for someone willing to help with lifting, carrying, loading, and unloading.
Opportunities for this work can come from simple advertising. Consider posting on Craigslist, Marketplace, community bulletin boards, apartment laundry rooms, and other places where people look for local help. The easier it is to find you, the more opportunities you’re likely to see.
